This is a medium sized
tree attaining a height of up to 30 - 45 m and with a diameter
of approximately 0.8m. The heartwood is yellow-brown to chocolate
coloured, With grey to almost black stripes. The timber has a fairly
wide to interlocked grain with a coarse texture. Saws moderately
well and takes an excellent finish.

The tree can reach a height
of up to 20 m with a diameter of 0.6m, The sapwood can be up to
200 mm in width. The heartwood is black with streaks of grey which
is caused by a fungal staining, giving a strong contrast to its
appearance. The timber is most favoured for high class work it
takes an excellent finish. The timber makes a very good acoustic
guitar and the sound quality is excellent on a finished instrument.

This timber grows in south eastern Australia and Tasmania. The
heartwood varies from a lustrous golden brown colour to a reddish
-brown with dark brown streaks. The wood has a curly to interlocked
grain with a medium texture. The wood is capable of producing a
very nice fiddleback figure which only occurs on selected logs,
This timber is closely related to the timber found in Hawaii named
