Craft Supplies Courses and Demonstrations

About our Courses
For over 35 years Craft Supplies have successfully run workshops in the heart of the Peak District. We have tutored woodturning to over 12,000 students already and look forward to teaching many more. The courses offered cater for the complete beginner to advanced level. All Tutors are highly skilled and accomplished woodturners in their own right.

All tools, equipment, smocks etc. are provided. Craft Supplies place priority on safety and course participants can be assured of complete cover for Public Liability up to £1,000,000. Our courses are limited to four students, so everyone attending can expect to receive a high level of individual tuition. Minimum age of students is 14 years. Lunch is provided on all courses.

If the dates listed are not convenient, please contact us, as we may be able to arrange new dates to suit. Please also bear in mind we can give one to one tuition but naturally this is more expensive. Please enquire if this is of interest.

1 day Woodturning Course

Suitable for the complete beginner wishing to have a taste of Woodturning before committing to a more involved course, or any turner who feels a little rusty in some areas and requires extra practice.  The instructor will tailor the course to suit your requirements and go over any little problems.  Please specify your requirements when reserving your place.

2 day Woodturning Course

You will learn a sound basic approach to woodturning, which you can develop in your own workshop.

Beginners are guided through the safe use and correct sharpening of the range of woodturning tools with an emphasis on cutting the wood into shape.  A complete novice can expect to complete a number of projects selected as an excellent introduction to all the tools and techniques essential to woodturning.

More experienced turners can expect to sort out problems they have encountered in their work, whilst benefiting from the ‘tips of the trade’, the use of more specialist equipment and the construction of simple devices that increase both speed and enjoyment. The importance of design, as well as methods and techniques is emphasised.

Woodcarving Course

All students attending our Woodcarving course can expect to receive an extremely high level of individual tuition. All equipment and materials are provided. Our woodcarving courses are tailored to the individual progress of all students and the following areas will all be thoroughly covered: -

Choosing tools
Sharpening tools
Planning and transferring designs to wood
Cutting out using bow/band saws
Use of tools
Types of finish

Although students’ work may not be finished at the end of their course, they will have been guided through all the stages to enable them to confidently continue at home.

Guitar Making Course - Acoustic

Devised around a quality Guitar Making Kit , the course will provide six days expert tuition, concentrating on the vital skills in guitar making.  Much of the basic work has already been done to the kit to enable the student to get the most out of a short course. After six days each person should leave with the skills to complete their guitar which should be in the final stages of production. They will also have the skills to continue to make quality guitars in their own workshop.

The kit will include all components to complete a classical or acoustic guitar made of mahogany, walnut or sycamore. The neck will be pre-machined, the tops and backs will be pre-sanded and jointed. The tail blocks and bridge will also be completed.

The course tutor, Alan Marshall, will talk to students prior to each course to assess their level of skill and their particular requirements. To ensure each student has the correct level of instruction the workshop will be limited to a maximum of five students. We will provide all tools and consumables as well as refreshments and lunch.

An enjoyable and rewarding six days is guaranteed

Guitar Making Course - Electric

As well as our Acoustic Guitar Making Course with Alan Marshall we can also offer an Electric Guitar Making Course with John Shuker. Based around a quality Guitar Making Kit, the course aims to provide the student with expert tuition, concentrating on vital guitar making skills with the aim of making an electric guitar simply in a short period of time.

Students are required to have basic woodworking skills i.e. sanding, drilling, and carving. After 5 days each student should leave with an electric/bass guitar, instruction guide and template set.

The kit will include all parts to complete an electric guitar/bass guitar.

The course tutor, John Shuker, will talk to students prior to each course to assess their level of skill and their particular requirements. To ensure each student has the correct level of instruction and to allow all participants to safely complete their guitars, the workshop will be limited to a maximum of five students. We will provide all tools and consumables as well as refreshments and lunch.

An enjoyable and rewarding five days is guaranteed.
