Tutors
Ken Allen - Woodturning
Ken's interest in woodworking started at a very early age. His main interest was in antique restoration, but he soon branched out into woodworking and has proved to be a very capable and popular woodturning instructor. He has taught in Australia winning many awards there and in the UK. Ken will adapt his course to suit the requirements of his students.
Mick Hanbury - Woodturning
Mick is a skilful and artistic woodturner who has been turning for over 18 years. He is listed on the Register of Professional Turners as well as being a member of Association of Woodturners of Great Britain. Over the years Mick has developed a unique style of decorative finishes to his pieces and is well known for his beautiful finial boxes, elegant spiral stem goblets, and delicately patterned platters.
Bob Lambert - Woodturning
Bob's woodworking skills have been acquired over many years. He is a highly qualified carpenter and joiner, with wide experience in cabinet making and a keen interest in all aspects of woodworking. Bob relishes the opportunity to pass on his knowledge and has taught woodworking the "Shopsmith Way" for over 11 years.
Gerry Marlow - Woodturning
Gerry’s interest in woodworking started at school and continued throughout his career in the electrical industry.
After taking early retirement he took up wood turning. In 2003 he was invited to be on the Register of Professional Turners and is a member of the AWGB.
He now teachers and demonstrates throughout the UK. He enjoys turning anything from 3mm spindle work, to large diameter bowls and platters, particularly with natural edges or decorative rims. He also specialises in off centre turning. He enjoys teaching beginners through to advanced turners.
Tom Hanson - Woodcarving
Tom works from his home in North Wales. His love of the countryside and its inhabitants are brought to life in wood using both traditional and contemporary tools. His tuition over the last 12 years has been greatly appreciated. The following will be thoroughly covered.
Choosing tools, sharpening tools, planning and transferring designs to wood, cutting out using bow/band saws, use of tools and types of finish.
Alan Marshall - Acoustic Guitar
Alan's love of music goes back over 40 years. He started as a keen amateur builder in 1981. Starting in full time business in 1987 has built up a reputation as one of the UK's premier hand makers of acoustic guitars. Alan will provide six days of expert tuition devised around a quality guitar kit. Much of the basic work has already been done to enable the student to get the most out of the course. The neck will be pre-machined, the tops and backs will be pre-sanded and jointed with the rosette fitted. The neck tail blocks prepared and bridge completed. The course will have a maximum of five students who should leave with the skills to complete their guitar, which will be in the final stages of production. You will also have learned the skills and techniques to continue to make quality guitars in your own workshop.
An enjoyable and rewarding six days is guaranteed!
Jon Shuker- Electric Guitar
Jon’s guitar making goes back to his teenage years when he made his first guitar at the age of 16. Having worked in engineering for a short period after leaving college, he put the expertise he learned into practice in his guitar making. Jon has successfully run his own business making electric and bass guitars for professional musicians both in the UK and Europe for many years. He now looks forward to passing on his guitar making expertise to course members.
